As early as possible. Players who started as small children generally turn out to be the best players. Bear in mind that many footballers are being signed by professional teams at 7, 8, 9 years old. My nephew is two and he likes kicking the ball around but it's hard to teach him anything as he just won't listen but he is still learning.
