Should I take this nanny job? Pros and cons?
-
I am 18 and finish my ALevels in late June so I have a few months off before I start my teacher training degree in September. I currently work at a hotel kids club as a casual worker so they arent obliged to give me shifts and I'm not obliged to take them. I havent been given any since Christmas and although it may pick up for summer it may not. I'd really prefer to nanny for a family rather than always having different kids every few days. I signed up to a jobseekers website not really expecting replies and unsure if I really want to nanny and got a reply the next day but I really don't know whether I want the job. Cons: They live a half an hour bus ride away because I don't drive whereas I saw other members living within walking distance but they can only email me i cant contact them :( They want Monday to Friday ideally and she mentioned bedtimes which would be a really long day. This is my last summer before uni I only really want to work part time. They want me to look after their 4 year old because they're having a new baby so I guess this means they will be at home with me and her, which could be awkward? How would she respect me if mum was home? Experiences? Pros The child is 4 and thats the age I have most experience with and love best. The description and family sound lovely and in my heart I really want to do it. But there are so many practical drawbacks! They want me to go and see them on Sunday but I'm worried I will end up feeling pressured into accepting unrealistic terms because it's at their house/ let my heart run away with it! Am I being unrealisitc considering it at all?

Answer:
Children need someone to look up to. If her parents aren't their enough, you could be the person their for her. If you think the bus ride is worth it, then do it. Children follow their parents foot steps, and most parents see the Nanny as someone who works as a elder sibling in a way, the child should listen to you while the mother is there, and if the child knows right from wrong you shouldn't have any problems.

Hi, I totally understand where you're coming from. I have been a nanny for 5 years, I enjoy it but I am also ready to move on to something else. From personal experience, I have worked for stay at home parents or better work from home parents, which in my opinion doesn't make any sense whatsoever. With that I haven't had very good experience. Mom was in the basement and the kids were with me upstairs and didn't listen at all. I also wasn't comfortable having them there, because it always felt like somebody was watching me. I'm glad I'm not there anymore. It was definitely an experience I wouldn't want to give back but 4 out of 5 days sucked big time. I'm part time nannying now for a fantastic family and I have had one of the parents home the occasional time but those kids listen to me whether mom or dad are home or not, which I absolutely love. I also get along great with the parents. So it really depends on how you get along with them and what they expect from you. Make sure you ask them what they expect you to do, get them to write down their daily schedule (playtime, mealtime, snacks etc.) and then you can figure out if you can provide for the kid the way they want you to. When people ask me if I would recommend being a nanny I would say yes. It teaches you a lot about yourself and I know that I would be just fine raising my own children. But it's also not an 'easy' job. There will be days when the kids push your buttons and the next day they will be perfect angels. Best advice I ever got: Pick your battles ;) All the best!
Sounds like too many cons for you. I would give the jobseekers a chance and wait for more replies. You will only end up frustrated if you take this job. OR, on the other side, you can also look at it as temporary and just go for it knowing it has an end. In life we all have to do some jobs we are not exactly thrilled with, but it gets you through to your next phase. If they pay well, it may be worth considering since they contacted you right away and I'm sure had a lot of other people to choose from. You should go meet with them, but surely DO NOT feel pressured to take the job if you are really not comfortable with it. It's ok to say no! Good luck!
