What colleges in the US are tuition free?

What colleges (preferably on East or West coast or abroad) will include housing as part of tuition?

  • My financial aid will pay 100% of my tuition up to some pretty high annual limits (varies by state), but will not cover non-mandatory fees. Housing is one of the uncovered fees... so I'm looking for a school in which the cost of staying in the dorms is included in the tuition as opposed to being listed as an additional fee. I had seen colleges in the past that had for example, $189/SH tuition for full time students living off campus. They would have a separate tuition of like $300/SH for full time students living in the dorms (completely made-up figures used only for this example). THIS is exactly what I need, but can't seem to find any now and my google skills apparently aren't cutting it. I would prefer a school in one of the following locations, but am open to all suggestions if I find a school which bills the way I mentioned above. - East or West Coast - Gulf Coast - Central states (IA, NE, KS, MO, SD, IL, CO) - English speaking school abroad (These schools however would be capped at a total of $17,500 per year) That list is in no particular order of preference. Telling me about specific schools would be nice, but I'd also appreciate it if you could tell me search strategies to locate these schools. It appears that >95% of schools do not bill in this way, so just checking school by school hoping to get lucky does not seem to be an attractive option. Thanks for any help.

  • Answer:

There are some schools that will quote a "cost of attendance" that will include tuition, room, and board. But no schools actually include housing in the tuition itself. They might even get in trouble for doing something like that as separating tuition and housing are important for things like tax credits.

No one has it embedded in the tuition. You pay it as part of the tuition but they will always split "course tuition" and "housing" because most university have different housing options (basically different dorms and different room types) so the housing part of the tuition will vary based on this - its never fixed. When you were researching, u found these figures as approximative so they can tell students typically how much housing on campus would cost. But when it comes to actually billing the students, they will never include it as part of the tuition. But don't worry - if you have financial aid for the tuition, this is already great! Most universities have on campus job options that will help you pay additional expenses. And the second year, you can apply to be a resident advisor and get free housing. It's pretty competitive to get this job but if ur serious and responsible, u'll get it. I did that for my junior and senior years in college and it was amazing. I got a room for myself and free housing and got paid on top of it :)!
