How to fix Windows 7 ultimate sound?

How can I diagnose & fix sound problems on my Windows 7 PC?

  • Answer:

Not knowing what sound problems you are experiencing it is hard to provide a specific course of action. First check the driver for the sound chipset. Usually found in Windows in Control Panel. Is it correct and working? Now is it an on-board, meaning on the motherboard sound or is it an add in sound card (like Sound Blaster) card. Difference being where to find the sound driver. You need to install the sound driver for the chipset. This type of problem is indicated if you have little sound or no sound. If you are not getting surround sound or digital output then it could just be the settings. Open the audio settings (used to be double click on speaker on task bar) and go through the advanced settings and change to the appropriate settings. For the add on card type you need to use the software for the card to play with the settings for surround or stereo. If settings and driver are good and you are having a problem with surround or multiple speaker plug in not working (using more than one port on a on-board type) then you may need to enter the bios and change the settings for the audio ports to output from input so all three ports will work for sound.
