Do I have a learning disability in Math?

Course substitution /Math Learning disability?

  • Starting back in elementary school. I was diagnosed as having dyscalculia, which is a specifc learning disability that effects a persons ability to do and visiualize math computations. Im 24 now and married with 2 lovely children and would like to get my associates. I am terrified though because Im math illiterate literally. If the school knows I have a learning disability by law, arent they required to allow me a course substitution?

  • Answer:

I don't know if they are required to by law, but I'll bet you suffer more from anxiety than anything else when it comes to math. I say this because if you can go into a grocery store to buy items and not bounce checks, you're probably more math literate than you think you are. If you can write a check to pay the electric, gas, clothing, make cupcakes for the kids, tell time, etc., you're going to do ok. If you want an AA, the math you'll have to take in most Community Colleges isn't going to be anything horrible. There's not much you can substitute for math unless it's music or maybe logic. You're best bet is to call the school and ask them if it's allowable. The other thing might be to find coursework that doesn't require it. you can actually get a degree from Princeton without ever taking a math or foreign language class (which I think is inexcusable). Alternatively, you can go buy a workbook on general math and just review it so that your skills are up to the level they need to be.
