Cheapest wireless cable splitter?

2x tvs, 1x projector, cable box, and hdmi 4 way splitter all burnt out. why?

  • Hi I have a business where I had a cable box hooked up to a monoprice 4way powered hdmi splitter. the splitter ran to 2x tvs(sceptre) with a 20ft hdmi cable and 1 hi end hitachi projector with a 50 ft cable. The system ran fine for months. One day i came in, my hdmi splitter was fried(no power lights), 1 tv refused to turn on completely, and the other tv and projector read no input signal from any source + the hdmi output from the cable box is dead. What could have caused the whole system to burn up this way? This was very costly and i need to prevent it from happening again. To my knowledge, no one was messing with the cables before it all went down.

Were there any thunder storms in your area when this happened? I really have zero experience when it comes to hdmi splitters, but you said the splitter is powered so that is the first thing I would look to. If the splitter is plugged directly into a wall outlet a power surge may have fried the splitter and consequently the other equipment. In the future I would plug the splitter into a power strip with surge protection. The other place I would look is possibly the cable box, something you may want to consult with your cable company about. Again, if the cable box isn't surge protected it might be a good idea to plug it into a surge protected power strip in the future. Like I said, I don't have much experience in this area, but those would be my best guesses. __________________________________ Given those additional details you provided, I would think a surge through the splitter or cable box might have been the issue. Also, check to see if the splitter has built in surge protection. Another place you may want to look at is your cable routing. Do any of the cables run through the walls (apart from the main cable into the building)? I see you said that the cables were undisturbed but if they run through any walls I would also take a look at those and make sure everything is in order. Also, sometimes the cable tv technicians can screw up the cable routing so it might be worthwhle to take a look at those as well. Check for any damaged insulation, pinch points, places where the cable is likely to get punctured or damaged, ect.
