Am I wasting money on Health Insurance?
-
For almost two years I have had health insurance both through my workplace and through Golden Rule. I'm thinking of cancelling Golden Rule. It cost me over $1000 this year and my work insurance only cost a small fraction of that. I would be fine with just my work insurance. However I am thinking of quitting my job at the store I work after I find a job at a different store or in a different career. There is a possibility the new job would not have benefits. I ask this because in the last few years I have had hospitalizations for mental health problems so I'm not sure what to do. Should I cancel Golden Rule? With my recent mental health history, what would I expect if I had to sign up for a new insurance plan if I changed to a job that does not have benefits? Would they deny my application, or make mental health issues a pre-existing condition? Or would they charge me really high rates?

Answer:
Jeez, you want to cancel the coverage that costs you less than $100 a month because you haven't had anything major go wrong yet?? Please. Once you DO have something major go wrong, you won't be able to buy any coverage for THAT THING, and, when you DO, it's going to cost way, way WAY more than $100 a month. Most states, with mental health issues, it's an automatic decline, for new health insurance. Otherwise, they can flat out exclude the preexisting condition. AND they'll charge you really high rates, but since you've been HOSPITALIZED for it, the most likely scenario is that you'll flat out be declined.

If you cancel and change to a job without benefits, expect to have to pay at least $5000 per year for insurance. And to have all your existing issues excluded, so you will have to pay for them yourself with your own money, without using insurance.

You wouldn't be able to get coverage on your own. Your best bet is likely keeping the plan you have, but talk to the health insurance broker you bought the plan from.
