How to get into medical school?

  • Hello.. I'm a first year medical student in Kuwait University.. But I would like to study in Canada or the United States I'm Canadian.. And I'd like to know.. Do I have to study general science for 4 years to get into school of medicine? Or can I get into a college of medicine directly? And.. What's the difference between "school of medicine" and "college of medicine?" If you know anything or any information please inform me! Thank you very much.

  • Answer:

yes, you need to study any 4 year science course, that would be called as premedical course. Then, you will be eligible to study medicine, but that also depends on the curriculum of the school you are entering if they would credit the subjects you had. School of medicine would have pre medicine courses or gen. science courses but college of medicine would mean that there is no pre medicine courses/

For US, you need to complete a baccalaureate degree in a standard premed program so that you have all the prerequisite courses in sciences and math. Then you apply to medical school, which is another 4 years of study. Admission to US medical schools is extremely competitive and many schools do not accept foreign students. In addition to really superior grades, you need the MCAT exam, and you need professional, academic references, character references, community service, leadership, etc, which all enter into the admissions process. Very expensive to study medicine in the US. It's not called the "Million Dollar Education" without just cause! If you are a Canadian citizen, more likely you want to try to get into Canadian schools. But if you are a Canadian citizen, what on earth are you doing studying medicine in Kuwait? Don't count on transferring easily into Canadian schools. Canada is perhaps not quite as competitive as the US, but certainly very difficult to get into - Canada has very high standards for admission to its med schools.
