Pets. Teacup Pigs? Hedgehogs? So confused!?
-
Okay, so I was looking for a some-what exotic pet. I researched hedgehogs, but found out certain kinds can turn sour. Then I set my sights on teacup pigs, but I found out you can get screwed over if they end up growing big. I'm still at home with my parents, and they will not except dogs or cats unless they: Don't shed, don't bark, don't pee or poop inside, can stay home alone for more than 8 hours, and basically has the human abilities to feed themselves and go in the toilet :p They have agreed to look into small, fairly chill animals that are less common and down right cool. I don't like lizards or hamsters or bunnies. I'm looking for uncommon. Ideas?

Answer:
Hedgehogs don't make good pets for everyone. For instance, they're nocturnal and will be up all night running on their wheel, which is mandatory to be healthy and happy. They can get quite noisy. They also don't like loud noises themselves, as they have very sensitive hearing. They also need to be kept warm all year round, between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If they get chilled, they can get very sick. They need routine in their lives, and daily attention for an hour or more, something active young people might not be able to commit to. Have you considered rats? They are social, and easier to maintain than a lot of other animals.

The hedgehog problem is only an issue if you leave them for long periods of time, there is some ways you can ensure you don't get a 'huffy' hedgehog... ** always buy from a breeder that will let you see the mother, and father if possible. **NEVER buy from a pet shop **ask to hold 'your' hedgehog before you make any payment so you can see if you'll get on, they will naturally be slightly weary and maybe a little huffy but you will be able to figure out if they are a calm hedgehog after a cuddle with one for a few minutes *once you have brought your hedgehog the only way you can make sure they don't turn huffy is by holding them and playing with them everyday (this is essential anyway as they an get depressed and bored if you don't I hope this helps :)
