How long does grass grow in Arkansas?

Why wont my grass grow?

  • I live in Tucson, AZ. I've been trying to get grass to grow all winter and all spring so far. I've tried generic grass seed and fertilizer, pennington one step seed and finally scotts ez seed. nothing grows. ...well i shouldn't say NOTHING, but 99.5% of the seeds don't grow. I have a few patches....Most of the grass i do have though is grass that grows wild in the area. I water the grass every day..sometimes more than once a day and it gets sun all day long. The temperature has been anywhere from 50 - 80. The only thing i can think of at this point is the dirt isnt suitable for the seed, but i have no trouble growing wildflowers from seed in the same dirt. ...and the ez seed is supposed to grow even on cement! Any tips would be appreciated. I'm about to give up and put in fake grass.

  • Answer:

Because it's not green enough. The water should be purple and the soil should be blue. I would have thought you knew these things?!

First what type of grass? In AZ you have 2 grass seasons and two different grasses (if you want). Summer grass is bermudagrass. It goes dormant as temps drop after October and won't green up again for several months until the night temps get above 50-60. To have a winter lawn you overseed the bermudagrass with a cool season grass such as ryegrass. This dies out with summer heat. Personally I woldn't have a lawn in southern AZ unless I had mega bucks for the water bill and then I'd hire a landscape company to do all the lawn turn arounds for me. AZ soil is a joke. You've got caliche, high salts (could be part of your problem), no top soil, no organic matter. You have to do major soil reconstruction just to get a soil sitable for lawn. Then you have the water bills.......you'll get dinged extra for going over your allotment if your lawn is of much size. Tuscon has absolutely lovely native and desert suitable plants. You dont need 10 tons of gravel and a couple of cactus......you can have shade, color, seasonal interest without becoming a gravel quarry. OK, granted most of your neighbors do have the gravel/barrel cactus landscapes. Here's ASU's take on lawn in AZ: http://www.lawngrass.com/states/arizona.html
