Can a teen legally work 2 part-time jobs?

How exactly does working 2 part time jobs work?

  • I know this is going to seem like a stupid question, but I'm just curious. I currently work part time at Bath & Body Works, and I'm lucky to get more than four hours per week, since they're not super busy right now. I don't want to quit there, because having that employee discount comes in handy when it comes to gifts and such. So I have been looking for a second part time job. I'm just curious how working 2 part time jobs works? Like, with scheduling and all. What if one place schedules you to work the same time you're supposed to work at your other job?

  • Answer:

You can work one during the week and the other on the weekend or work one during the day and the other in the evening, but however you schedule them you have to make sure both managers know when you're available to work for them.

In the interview process, you should inform them of the other job as well as telling your current job that you will be working a second one as well. If you know the days you work at B&BW, that what you need to tell the new employer. However, if the new employer can tell you the times that they want to work, tell B&BW so that each company will have plenty of time to schedule around you. This way if they do schedule you (though they shouldn't if the manager cares about their employees), you can give them plenty of notice about your current hours elsewhere--ideally try to find someone to take over your shift and present it to the manager. It can be tough, but I've held two jobs at once before. One employer didn't pay attention to the days I said I couldn't work, so I traded my fellow employees for their shifts--or just sacrificed the paycheck for the other job.

Hey girl, I know how you feel. I work at Future Shop (Canadian Best Buy) and I am lucky if I get 3 hours a week. Though their scheduling is a piece of balls I am still working there because of my discount. It`s sweet! I applied last month at a bridal store and I got the job. Now I`m working two part time jobs while in high school. During the interview I warned the manager I still intend to work at Future Shop, so they would have to work around my schedule (in a more polite way of course). I got hired. They work around your schedule. So if you have the posted schedule at Bath and Body Works, tell your second job before hand so they can schedule you anytime, but that day. Its pretty simple.

You didn't mention the kind of work you do, or whether or not you were on salary or an hourly worker. Also, how do you know that your co-workers make "50% more"? If hourly (and salaried non-exempt) you should be getting time and one-half for all hours worked over 40 in a week (7 day period). If salaried (and you meet the criteria for exempt status), then there is a "weekend bonus" provided by considerate employers usually up to $200/day for weekend work. I would recommend that you take your job description, if any, and go to the Wage and Hour Division of the Department of Labor. You may have a valid complaint and if so are entitled to back pay. You also may be the victim of "Salary Discrimination", since you are performing the same work as your peers but at a lower pay level. Contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), You'll find them listed in the white pages of the phone book.
