Teens: Highschool gymnastics question?
-
I really want to make varsity on the gymnastics team. What skills are usually required/ what level? I still have a lot of time (try outs are in November) and I'm going to 2 gymnastics camps is summer so I'll hopefully learn new skills. This is everything I have (well not like the basics): Floor: Round off backhand spring x2 Standing back handspring Working on back tucks/ fulls Front punch Front handspring Working in front layout and full Beam: Front dismount Roundoff dismount Working on back tuck dismount Cartwheel Handstand Almost back walkover Full turn All jumps Bars: Flyaway Bckhipcircle working on giants and kip (almost have it) Vault: Front handspring Round off Working on Round off back tuck Will I make it? I'm really scared. What other skills should I try?

Answer:
It depends on how many other girls try out, and their skill level. You have a good start, though

I'm not a teenager, and I don't do gymnastics, but my sister did, and my nieces do. FIRST, before learning any other skills, get the ones perfected that you "almost" have, and then polish up your whole rep. Make sure you are still accurate on what you have already learned, THEN consider adding new skills. If you are not careful, you can get sloppy and that will get your scores down faster than anything else. Gymnastics is a very perfectionistic (is that a word? lol) sport. In my personal opinion, anything you can do solidly on the beam you can probably also do well on the floor. If it's allowed, see if your parents can tape you (OK, I'm out of date, what can I say? You know what I mean.) during your regular gymnastics classes so you can watch yourself later and see what you need to work on. One clue for this kind of thing is that usually you need to work on the stuff you don't like! I have loved watching gymnastics since Kathy Rigby, Mary Lou Retton, Bart Conner, and Nadia Comaneci. (Definitely giving away my age here!) The really great ones are the ones who make it LOOK effortless! A good gymnast gives pleasure to his/her audience! Good luck!
