What other kinds of fish can I add to my 20 gallon tropical tank?
-
At the moment I am cycling the tank with two platies and two mollies as well as a rock shrimp and the cycle is almost done and Im getting ready to add some more fish, but I don't know what I can add. I was looking at some swordtails, maybe another two of those but I only really like them because of the tails which are from males and I dont want to deal with any baby fish ( my other 4 fish are female and I know swordtails and platies can inbreed). I was hoping to get some kind of crab, prefferably vampire or maybe a red-asian crab, at least two and some bottom feeder, preferably a pleco or loach. Ideally I don't want schooling fish but I do like social fish such as the ones I already have. So what can I add? I was thinking of having a couple rams but once again I don't know anything about them I do know that I don't want any guppies or goldfish Thanks

I just wanted to mention that I really do not recommend the crabs you were thinking of, both of those types and most other types I can think of would gladly snack on platys and mollies because they have a tendency to sink when they sleep. Also, I have never had luck keeping more than one vampire crab together without them killing eachother, they aren't known to get along. I do recommend dwarf gouramis as someone else mentioned though, they would also add some color. A pleco would be a nice addition, as would an apple snail if it's large enough to not get eaten by your fish. Maybe try a few rummy-nosed or lemon tetras? Best of luck.

Some good combinations that look good and get together nicely are gouramis, cichlids, Livebearers (Guppies, Platies, and Swordtails), tetras and loachers (bottom feeders). All of them are fairly small, gouramis and cichlids growing to only a few inches. All of these fish have low aggression rates, the loachers are neutral of course and tend to stay to themselves. These species are cheap too, most under 10, the larger ones under $15.

Loaches are shoaling fish, you need to have at least 5, you could get zebra loaches or kuhli loaches. The only plecos that could live in a tank that small are clown pleco or candy striped pleco, they do have those at petco and they are really cute. All those crabs are brakish water animals that need terraims, not aquariams, they cant live in a set up that would support fish.

Swordtails will go well in there. If you don't want to deal with babies don't worry about them. I have an all livebearer tank and I don't save my fry. Let the strong survive. I usually only have one or two per batch. Most are eaten. If I saved them all id have hundreds of fish. I don't know anything about rams but they are said to he good community fish and they are pretty awesome looking. Maybe get a few more mollies of various varieties or more platies. I live the albino tiger ones and peppermint platies.
