    Solar wind that is blasted out from the Sun will hit earth magnetic field which would deflect the solar wind up and around the planet. The charged particles slam into the atmosphere around the poles and produce the auroras that are usually seen between 3° to 20° in latitudinal extent from the poles. That is a band known as the Auroral zone. During a strong geomagnetic storm, the auroras can spread lower than 20°.
