What does it really mean if you ride Hunt Seat?
-
Ok so I don't have that much experience riding but i have taken lessons before but my instructor never really told me what she was teaching me so now starting next week im going to a new barn, new instructor and she says that they offer Western(i know what that is), English, and Hunt Seat. So since my old instructor never really told me anything i don't know which one im familiar with. It wasn't western so I guess what im asking is whats the difference between english and hunt seat? Thanks in advance!

It might be helpful to see it in context. Can you give a link to the website? There are two main types of saddles: english and western. You know what western is, so you have a good start! There are a couple different kinds of english saddles, such as dressage, saddle seat, and hunt seat. A hunt seat saddle looks like this: http://horsesaddlestackandaccessories.storeblogs.com/files/2009/06/bailey-mandy-quarter-horse-show-2006.jpg http://www.weathervanetackshop.com/p7lsm_img_3/fullsize/2006.jpg It has shorter stirrups and has a deeper seat. It is used in jumping, pleasure, and trail riding. A saddle seat looks like this: http://www.localhorse.com/disciplines/26.jpg http://www.usasaddlery.com/pics/jti/jties7055.jpg It has longer stirrups and a much flatter seat. It is used in saddle seat. A dressage saddle looks like this: http://s7d5.scene7.com/is/image/PetsUnited/TSLT900043_101343 http://www.sustainabledressage.net/front_illu.jpg It has longer stirrups and a deep seat. So your new barn teaches hunt seat and I would guess english means saddle seat. Hopefully the photos can give you an idea of what type of saddle you used to ride in.

The previous answerer did a great job answering your question but I want to simplify it further. Hunt seat is a type of English riding. Hunt Seat is English. There is no "difference". Dressage, hunt seat, saddle seat, jumping, traditional polo, and even racing are all types of English riding. Hunt seat is the most popular style of English pleasure riding so when someone says they ride "English" they are usually referring to "Hunt Seat", though hunt seat is not the only kind of English riding.
