What tour companies would you recommend?

What is the best Italy Tour company for a vacation? Or is it better to go on your own?

  • I have done a little research looking into Globus Journeys and taking either the Tour of Italy package or the Umbria's Treasures Tour. If you have travel with Globus (preferably Italy) could you provide a summary of your experience and any suggestions you may have? If you have take any other tour companies for trips to Italy that you would recommend what company was it, what tour did you take, and what was your experience? I have also read that outside the airfare and tour price you will be given optional tours (which seem to be 50/50 on recommendations) plus additional food. Is it better to use a tour company or can you tour Italy by yourself? I'm not sure if it would be cheaper or if you would get to see more. Some benefits of a tour company I see are that tour lines to popular places I have heard are much shorter and the tour guides are helpful, along with many of the hotels and stops being preplanned. Although some of the food does not seem to be the best, it seems as though nice hotels may be hard to come by and/or book on your own. Thanks for your time and opinions!

  • Answer:

Globus is a very good tour company- and yes- at the end of the day it does work out cheaper to go on a tour. It's very hard to get the same value out of a self-drive holiday, unless you are travelling with a local. Doing a coach tour saves you time, stress and ensures you get the best value for your time. I would explore a few other tour companies though just to compare prices and inclusions. Take a look at: www.insightvagations.com www.peregrinereserve.com/Italy www.scenictours.com The above are all premier tour companies. If you're looking at going on a budget - Globus's partner Cosmos, or Trafalgar Tours might be an option.

I would say go it alone. That way you can see exactly what you want, for as long as you want, when you want. Although tours are convenient in that they do everything for you, you are also at the mercy of others in the group. Many an hour can be lost trying to find a lost guest etc. I spent a month in Italy in 2004 travelling around the country and absolutely loved it. Especially in the northern parts. Honestly, most people say to go alone for your Italy Tour, which although might be nice it's usually much more pricey, and there is a lot more prep involved! What I would recommend is to consider CentralHolidays.com and I suggest this company as during my research, I noticed that they have over 30 years of experience which means they know the places to check out and can offer you the best prices for your money! Ultimately, why choose anywhere else? Globus does seem to be a reasonable place, but doesn't offer nearly as much experience! If you want a full link, just check it out in the comments below :)

The ultimate cheap way to Europe is doing it yourself. I recommend that you get an idea what flights will cost you from your place to Europe (London, Paris, Rome and Frankfurt). Then add to this 60 USD per day and person. Calculate the total cost of a do-it-yourself trip this way and compare to the vaction package deals.
