What do you call the glasses wore by near-sighted people?

Do you think I just need glasses or do you think something is seriously wrong with my eyes? Please help!?

  • My vision is blurry on far away object and the farther away it gets.. then I can't see it at all it's just this big blur. (like words on tv.) I think I have near sighted vision. Anyways I'm trying to figure out whether I just need glasses or I have an actually eye disease or something. I am a hypochondriac by the way. Every member in my immediate family needs glasses. Dad is farsighted since he was like 8. My sister is farsighted? for at least 10 yrs or so (shes 25) and my brother is nearsighted for like 3 years now. (he's 22) My mom has just had vision problems since she's been older. And almost every extended family has glasses. All four grandparents, every aunt and uncle and almost (like maybe 2 that don't need them) every cousin on both sides of family need them. My grandpa has cataracts and glaucoma but he's old so... Other than that there is no disease of the eye on either side of the family. No diabetes either. But ive been wondering if I have Diabetes or not (hypochondriac) I don't think I do. Even if I did, I read that it can take years for people to know if they have Type 2 Diabetes so even I was a diabetic would it already affect my vision? I have looked at the laser lights before, but it's never really been shined directly in my eye for long periods of time. I am 15 1/2 years old. The last time I went to an eye doctor I think I was 6 years old. My Vision was 20/20 then. And really it was fine up until a few years ago. I am hs'ed now. But I was 11 yrs old and I never really had trouble seeing things. And defiantly not in 5th grade.(age 10) It wasn't really until I was about 12 1/2 I started knowing i couldn't see things, and only then because other people could see things I couldn't. I spend almost 24/7 on the computer and it seems like ever since I started spending a lot of time on the comp. my vision has gone down hill. One times (a few months ago) I didn't spend ANY time on the tv or comp. for like 2 weeks and I could see better (still blurry on tv but at least I could read it) tha lasted like a week and then it went downhill again and that hasn't every happened before or since. (but ive been on the computer too) It seems to just get worse and worse. It takes a long time for my eyes adjust in the dark but after it does I think I can see relatively well. I have a horrible diet (soda and candy) and honestly absolutely nothing healthy EVER. I have ate like this my entire life. (I am a healthy weight though.) If I squint I can see a little better (but if im really far away from the tv or something I still can't see it just makes it a little clearer. Squinting hurts my head though. I noticed recently if I close my eyes for just a few seconds and then open them and NOT blink stuff is a lot clearer but then as soon as I blink its right back to blurry again. I can't see things far away (even if they are really not that far away) like words on a tv and farther away I get I can no longer read it is just really blurry. And like signs on the freeway I can see it better and better the closer we get to it and when we get really close I can see it and it is perfectly clear. But I can see the actual sign itself as soon as a normal sighted person can. I can see cars off etc. If I look at across my lot (we have a lot of land) I can see houses, houses clear on the mountain, I can see people, birds, dogs, etc far way. About a football field lengh away or something I could see a fox and some prairie dogs. I wore my brother's classes ( he has bad eyesighted and is nearsighted.) It's amazing how much it helped! I could see things perfectly fine on the tv and everything came in clear and it improved my vision and made me realize how poor my sight really is. Things that concern me: The laser, but it never was pointed directly at my eye for long periods of time. Diabetes. If I was a diabetic I would have type 2 and I read that people can have diabetes for years and not know, which makes me think my vision wouldn't be decreasing like this. I don't really think I have diabetes though. Any thoughts? I looked at this vision thing and the lines for supposed to be straight. And if the lines were squiggly then you had macular deg. The lines for straight for me. I PASSED that test. Things that concern me: Ever since I was like 2 or 3 I could see red spots. No other way to explain that really just small red spots everywhere that is extremely enhanced when it's dark. I don't even notice it anymore. (unless it's dark.) I had my eyes checked when I was little and everything was 100% fine. And I didn't start having vision problems until about 10 yrs later. So I guess that nothing. I get a spec of blood in the corner of both eyes first just when I showered and then after I sleep this only happens when I have makeup on. This started recently (month or so) and I haven On the red spots it literally just noticed it one night and been that way ever since. Has never gotten better or worse. When I was 6 I got kicked in the eye I had a scratch across pupil and my vision was blurry I went to the doctor and got eye drops. 2 week recheck my eye and Vision was back to normal. And both eyes are the same vision wise and I only got kicked in one eye so I don't think that has anything to do with it. Other than that no eye trauma. I don't have a healthy diet, lots of stess and don't get much sleep. I don't have any pain or anything and my eye looks fine. I've never had pink eye or any other infection. So just need glasses or something wrong. If you have any more questions ask and I will respond. Im sorry it's so long. Please help me I REFUSE to go to an eye doctor so dont' even mention that. Thanks! It wasn't an "off topic personal message" you stated the obvious in your response and I was letting you know that I wasn't asking for that. And I know that by not going to an eye doctor I will just have to deal with it that's what I have been doing for the last 4 or so years. What I am trying to ask is: Do I just need glasses? Or is something seriously wrong, i.e. going to make me go blind? And yes there is a reason I refuse to go to the doctor. 1. and the main reason is I don't want my parents to know because then literally everybody will now. So when I am 18 , moved out, and have my own insurance ( so they won't see the claim or something.) Then I will go to the eye doctor get glasses, and then just not wear them around them. Or if there was some way to do that now without your parents knowing, I would. But I don't really know of any option that exists like that. Why? You might ask I don't know I'm just really weird like that, alway

  • Answer:

What you have sounds perfectly normal for someone who is becoming slightly short sighted. Bad eyesight is about teh shape of your eyeball which changes as you grow so people often find that they get short sighted /far sighted as they grow. If your relatives are short/far sighted it increases your chances. You are not the only person who posts that they want to hide having less than ideal vision from their parents. However its just not practical. As you grow its likely your eyesight will get worse and you're just not going to be able to manage school without. They will notice that you can't see things properly, its fairly obvious someone else can't see properly if you can't yourself. Neither are you going to be able to afford glasses or go to the eye doctor to get a perscription without help from your parents. There is also the option of contact lenses which are really fantastic. Dont' waste your years growing up when proper eyesight will make all sorts of things possible just because you want to keep a secret.

Way too much information. Short answer - go to see an optician, get your eyes tested, and see if you need classes. It sounds like this is the most likely outcome. NB - following up your off-topic personal message; if you know it's likely to be a sight issue, and you won't go to an eye doctor, then you're just going to have to deal with decreased vision. It's the common sense option. Is there even a reason you won't go? Glasses/contacts aren't exactly the worst thing that could happen to you.

How on Earth can you expect to get a proper answer (as well as be taken seriously) to your concern without having your eyes checked by an Opthalmologist?
