How safe is government job these days?

Questions about considering an application for a usps job? Any thoughts?

  • I have a fulltime job right now. Im a production assoc in a big company. Getting paid 12.80/hr plus differential coz i work graves. So almost 14/hr. Have benefits. Paid vacation and holidays, insurance, 401k, life insurance. I work 6-7 days/week. Since it is production i have to work hard and really, really fast running these machines to build parts. Now im getting exhausted because of these overtimes and just by the fast phase. I actually got hurt from it so im here thinking if i should try to look for a lighter job.. Im trying to look for a different job thats at least pays to close where i am right now. I checked USPS and they have an openning for a pse sales&svcs/distribution assoc that gets paid 14.60/hr 25-30mi away from my house..i believe you will be the one that stays in the window and sell like stamps etc..my concerns are: Will it be worth the try? Will it be a good decision if ever i ditch my old job and get the usps job if ever i get accepted? Im a part time nursing student, is there any night shift for this job or what time do they normally work? It says on the job description "time varies" Is there somebody that has the same position in usps with this kind of job? Any thoughts u have? Pointers? Is this a super hard job? Ive been really wanting to work for the government coz i feel more secured in some ways. Pls enlighten me Thank you

  • Answer:

To be employed by the post office, you must first pass the Civil Service Exam. You should start by taking the exam and see if you get a high enough score. If you get hired by the post office, you will probably start out working in the back sorting. The people who work the counter are usually the people with seniority. The post office isn't the secure job it used to be. A lot of small offices have been closed, and there are plans to make more cuts.

Probably not, since the USPS is going to do even more downsizing in the future it is what is known as a dead end job, with no future to it.
