Does your medical residency have to be at a medical school?

Can any Doctors or medical students explain to me about life during medical school and residency?

  • Hello! I'm a sophmore in college and I've been planning on becoming a physician ever since high school. As time gets closer and closer to my MCAT, the reality of this situation is hitting me. I've always wanted to travel the world before I have a family; something that doesn't blend in with a medical education. If everything goes as planned, I would complete my fellowship at 31 and at that point I'd have limited time before I would have to have children. I know this may be a rather naive question, but are there any "breaks" or gaps during medical school and residency? Or is it every single weekday of the year? Basically, is there time to fit in a few trips (like maybe 5-7 days) at all during the 11 years of medical school + residency + fellowship? Because if not, I worry that I may miss out on a lot of things that I've spent my life looking forward to.

  • Answer:

Yes, there are gaps. You will be able to take time to travel. And 31 isn't like you're on the verge of menopause, for crying out loud, but I suppose to a 20 year old 31 might as well be 50. LOL
