What do wheelchair people eat?
-
Dear wheelchair people, I recently started a new job where I met a lovely wheelchair lady. I am inviting it for dinner on Saturday, and I'm frankly clueless as to what they eat. I heard that due to the fact they are always sitting, they have special dietary needs, and I want to make sure it can eat whatever I cook. Second, I am confused about the table arrangments. How do wheelchair people prefer to be accomdated at the table? Should I have my husband lift it onto a normal wooden chair or does it eat on it's wheelchair?

Answer:
FIRSTLY this woman is NOT a wheelchair lady. She is a woman who uses a wheelchair!!!! SECONDLY this woman is a PERSON NOT AN IT!!!!! THIRDLY using a wheelchair does not rob a person of speech ....ASK her what she would like to eat and whether she wants to eat at table or would prefer a tray. FORTHLY If this woman is unable to speak for herself or feed herself without special help then YOU ARE DEFINITELY NOT THE PERSON TO BE INVITING HER INTO YOUR HOME AND YOU NEED ONE HELL OF A LOT MORE TRAINING BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT SUCH A GUESTURE!! I hope your question is sincere, and if it is I applaud your enthusiasm but I have had to capitalise/'shout because you have made so many basic, horrible mistakes that until you have more experience and training PLEASE, I beg you do not do this, for the safety of this woman and the continuance of your job. I hope in 6 months or so you will look back on this with the same horror I am feeling now, and that you will, when your skills match your compassion become a valued support worker. LATE EDIT. thanks for the warning gbgr.....unfortunately, as a co-ordinator for volunteers to support people with disabilities in the community I have actually come across people with this attitude, so I took the question seriously

If you are inviting "it" and having your husband lift "it" so that "it" can it, it sounds very much like you are just talking about the wheelchair by itself. Why not invite "your friend" over, and not just her wheelchair? Your husband probably won't need to lift "your friend" as "she" will probably prefer to eat in "her" wheelchair. And you can ask "her" what "she" likes to eat beforehand.
