Which is better way to experience Hawaii?

Hawaii or Switzerland?

  • My grandma is giving me a graduation present of either going to Hawaii or Switzerland. I have always wanted to go to Hawaii because I believe it is absolutely beautiful and they have amazing tourist attractions. However, I am not really sure I should go to Hawaii because since I'm an American citizen I can always go to Hawaii in the near future. Switzerland would be an amazing culture experience and a way for me to experience something other than U.S norms. But, I'm a little worried because although I am very accepting and respectful to other cultures, I am not so sure if they would be more so accepting of me. More specifically, I was curious about how they treated minorities if racism existed in Switzerland. I would not like to spend money on a place that I felt completely out of place or worried about getting treated unfairly. I know its the 21st century but some places are still not racially tolerant. So please help!!!!!

  • Answer:

I'm from the UK and have lived in Switzerland for coming up 2 years now, and live in quite a small place. Yes racism IS around, as with any country, but 99.9% of the people I have met have been so friendly, and interested in me, so yeah. No problem at all. As long as you know how to say (in german/french) "Do you speak english?" this will get you a long way, rather than doing what so many americans do over, and strut up to an info desk or whatever and assume that they speak english. (My german still sucks big time!) I love love Switzerland, and is such a beautiful country, I would certainly recommend. I would say in the 2 years I have been here, I have experienced maybe 2 or 3 incidents of people giving me the cold shoulder or throwing me an insult because I'm not swiss, so don't let that put you off. Most of europe is very multi-cultural, and travelling around is not a problem. I have met plenty of Americans, Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians etc etc whilst being in Switzerland. Come here....it's a fab country! :D Edit: To the person who said Switzerland will be cheaper than Hawaii, maybe not....it's not a cheap country, plus in the summer it's actually very warm here, we don't live in the snow the whole year round ha ha.

Go to switzerland. people there are not intolerant. most swiss people are glad to see foreigners being interested in their country. there are far more things to discover in switzerland than just mountains and snow. you'll see a small country that speaks four languages, you'll see a country with few criminality and an open, multicultural society (25% of swiss population is not swiss). don't believe everything that's in the media about switzerland. there are people who are afraid of immigrants, but still it's a minority and anyway, as a tourist you're not an immigrant. it's always better to see another country than staying within the boarders. broaden your horizon, travel to europe. you can even travel to the near abroad by daytrips from switzerland, for example to milano, munich, lyon or strasbourg. but i'm sure you won't need these cities for a wonderful stay, switzerland is mindblowing and diverse.

I personally would choose Hawaii, but Switzerland is the right way to go because like you said, you can always go to the Islands. Cultural difference are also a reason to head to Switz. The Swiss are tolerant people, they are very accepting especially the young Swiss (who party as hard as Americans) The Swiss authorities, in the other hand, not so much. Like any other place in the world, there is racism in Switzerland. Swiss authorities will assume you are an illegal alien/intruder if you are of dark skin color, always have identification with you! The best thing about Switzerland is that people various different languages and some speak all. You can meet someone who speaks Swiss-French, German, and/or Italian.

YOLO is not an excuse

Go to Hawaii. In my opinion, there are more things to do there. Hawaii is like a 12 hour flight...Switzerland is 8-9 hours, so Switzerland would probably be cheaper (you can go there later on in life therefore). Lots of Americans live there and English is one of the main languages. It is soooo beautiful and you can surf and waterski and stuff. If you enjoy hot places, go there!!!!! If you prefer cold places, then I guess you should go to Switerland instead...but the only think I can think to do there is ski

Hawaii no doubt. Hawaii is rich in culture & history. There are many museums, art galleries, dance, theatre & historical tours. Hawaii inspires artists of various mediums then you can hike around and see the nature and beach. The volcano in the big island is def amazing.. If you just want to chill, grab a beer and watch the wave on the beach. It is quite and relaxing. You can play water sport like jet ski too
