Work experience at a nursery?

Doing Work Experience at a Nursery School?

  • I'm fourteen and soon I'm starting my work experience which is at a local nursery school. I'm wondering what to expect, how to interact with the kids and what the nursery teachers will be like? I'm also supposed to be doing admin work. What should I wear, and how do I treat the kids? I'm an only child, I don't have much experience with children and I'm very shy but I love children so I'm looking forward to it. Thanks! xx

I'm glad you are enthusiastic and looking forward to your work experience. When you interact with the children, try to get down to their level, face to face. Play with them, talk to them, follow their lead, and join in with what they are playing with. If you are at a table, and all the children have moved, leave the empty table and find more children to play with. If you have nothing to do, always ask the staff what you can do to help. Try not to sit around doing nothing because it suggests you are not interested, and children will not engage with you. Wear comfortable, sensible clothes (trousers and t-shirt), nothing revealing as you will have to get down on the floor. Make sure your shoes are sensible too; flat comfortable ones, so you can run around with the children. Relax and enjoy your placement, working with children can be fun, especially if you act like a child yourself around them :-) Good luck

Brilliant sign that you are asking lots of questions, shows you are willing to learn! :) Expect madness! (In a good way!lol!) The children may take a day or so to get use to you as you are a person that they have never met before but once they do they will talk to you alot. The best way to interact with the kids is to go over to what their playing with and just speak to them. Best way would be to say hello to them and then ask them what they are playing, they will soon start up a conversation with you! The nursery teachers will probably be very nice (kinda have to be the age group they are working with lol) If you show them you are willing to learn and interact with the children as much as you can, you'll get on great. You would be best to dress in comfortable but proffesional and old clothes (i.e no ow cut tops, no tops with slogans (even if its just a brand, it appears slightly unproffesional, and old clothes as there will be paint, play dough etc) no high heel (heels + little fingers = a big no no and a lot of screaming!lol) Just treat the kids as a younger version of your friends, speak to them about general things like what's their fav toy in the nursery, what they woud like to do at nursery today etc etc. Relax and enjoy it! Best of luck :)
