Help me choose a longboard!?

Help me choose my first longboard!?

  • I am in the market for a new longboard, which will be my first one. I don't know much about them other than what I've read on various sites. I'm not all that interested in crazy tricks, mainly just something to cruise around on and learn how to do it. Maybe a little messing around later on. I've never even skateboarded before so it will all be new. I just need help deciding on a board. I've been looking at the Arbor Bamboo Pintail model which seems pretty nice. Is it a decent board? Or is there something better out there for this purpose? As far as brand I've heard mixed reviews about Arbor and Sector 9, so it really sounds like it comes down to preference. Length? The pintail I'm looking at is 46" I think, which sounds a bit long but what do I know. Also how about the grip tape? I hear the clear coat stuff isn't as "grippy" as the actual black grip tape. Would that make much of a difference? Lastly, would you guys recommend pads and a helmet? Obviously it sounds like a good idea since I've never ridden before, but just curious. Thanks!

I would actually stick to something around 38"-40" for your first board. It will end up being more vesatile then a huge 46" board. As for shape, the pintail shape is fine for just cruising, but not much else. How about you look at the Sector 9 Mini Shaka. It is one of their better boards. Helmet is a good idea as well. You should really ask more on the SilverfishLongboarding forums. They will give you much better recommendations than most people here: http://www.silverfishlongboarding.com/

i would look at the boards by landyachtz, loaded, or sector nine. In my opinion they are the best brands out there and the boards will last you for a very long time. do not buy a cheap board because it may break or not perform well and it will turn you off of longboarding. As for grip tape i just use normal black grip tape but i don't think it's a big deal to use clear tape. And for helmets, ALWAYS wear a helmet and kneepads they will save you skin and your head multiple times from injuries.
