Where's a good place to live in England (Americans please answer too)?

• I was born and raised in England and so were my parents, so I do hold a British Citizenship, and I hold it proudly :) Where is a good place to live in England, I want it to be down south somewhere, and I want the city to be a place that's known around the world like London or Portsmouth. What are famous cities in the south of England that's famous around the world, this is why I called the Americans, thank you.

  Plymouth in Devon. Nice clean city on the sea with very strong maritime heritage, going back further than just Sir Francis Drake and the Mayflower, near beautiful Dartmoor, big university city, has close links and shared history with the US (the Pilgrim fathers left from here), gets a bit of a bad rap, because it's historic centre was bombed out by Hitler and replaced by ugly concrete buildings, in the 50's and 60's. A city where I feel relatively safe to walk the streets at night.
