How do I get my horse to trust and respect me?

How can I get my horse to trust and respect me?

  • Well I have to board her at my aunts and I usually go over there every couple weeks. I've done some groundwork with her and she does really well, but I feel that when I lunge her, she's not paying attention to me and the things around her. I just wanted to know if there is anything major I can do with her to get her to trust me a lot faster.

  • Answer:

    1) Go out more often than once every couple of weeks. 2) Quit lunging her. How would you feel if every time your human visited, all she did was chase you around in circles? 3) Start a natural horsemanship program. Parelli is by far the best, but some others are good, too. 4) Take off your watch, figuratively speaking. Horses aren't time-driven animals. You need to get on "horse time" if you ever want to truly be accepted.

This is an old Indian trick. Every time you go see your horse blow air up his\her nose and If they blow back they are accepting you as part of it's herd. I tried it with my horse she trust me and listens much better. I am not saying it will work for all horses.
