What countries have you lived in other than the UK?

Can I apply for the UK citizenship if I am married to a British but we don't live in the UK?

  • I know that some countries (like Canada and France) allow apply for the citizenship if married to the citizen of this country even though you don't reside there. We have been living in Japan with my British husband for a while, but might intend to move to the UK in the future. If we lived together in the UK, after being married for 2 years I would be eligible to apply for the British citizenship. Do you know if the same rules apply if we live abroad? I am having hard times finding this info on the Internet. Thanks.

  • Answer:

Being married to a British citizen does not confer citizenship on the spouse. Citizenship is based on residing in the UK, on an appropriate visa, and for a spouse this is currently for at least three continuous years. You would need a spouse visa before entering the UK, then after two years you can apply for ILR. After one year of ILR you can then apply for citizenship. Please be aware the rules are toughening up soon and the qualifying period will be at least five years of residence in the UK.

At the moment you won't qualify. You have to have 3 years residence in the UK with no more than 270 days absence (90 days maximum in each of the 3 years). Here's a link. http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/britishcitizenship/

Well the positive side is you can speak English which would help the situation, if your husband is british and carries and British passport, then yes you can apply for a UK visa. Ther fact you can speak English alone increases your chance incredably :). If you have a UK passport or visa, then you are entitled to live anywhere in the EU. The proccess could take several weeks, and you would need to contact the Home office in the UK. Best of luck :)
