Can I hook up a subwoofer to my receiver?

How to hook up an unpowered subwoofer to a receiver that only accepts an rca jack?

  • I currently have a Sony STR-DE698 receiver that has three speakers hooked up to it. A friend recently gave me his old unpowered sub which is a Sony SS-WMSP66. So my question is, how can I hook up the sub to the receiver if the receiver has an RCA jack for a sub input? I know that just splitting an odd RCA cable is probably bad news, which leads me to think that my only other options are either buying an amp, or getting a new sub.

You are correct, you must buy an amp or get a new sub. You can find a subwoofer amplifier here... http://www.parts-express.com/wizards/searchResults.cfm?srchExt=CAT&srchCat=505 They do have some pretty low cost options. mk

From the Sony site - that subwoofer is included in 3 different box systems. The speakers, subwoofer and amp in these types of systems are NOT designed to mix/match with other gear. I am afraid your only choice is to toss it. To save money - consider buying a subwoofer kit where all the parts come un-painted and you basically screw it all together. Try www.partsexpress.com and look at their kits. There are others but these are popular and they have a variety of prices.

Providing that the subwoofer has a left and right input, you can connect the left and right front speaker wire directly to the subwoofer and then connect the left and right front speaker to the subwoofer. You will also need to configure the receiver to have all the bass going to the front speakers. Your owners manual of the receiver should provide you the proper direction on this. Hope this will help you out.

It won't work, and yes you can really damage both units if your unsure of the specifications. Your receiver/amplifier, would need to have a sub out connection in order for it to work.

you cant, due to your receiver does NOT have a separate amp to power that sub you will need a subwoofer with a built in amp for your reciever
