How to hook a DVR Cable box to a DVD Recorder?

I have a dvd recorder without a receiver, and basic limited NON-DIGITAL cable. How do I hook up the dvr?

  • Our cable company has not switched the basic channels to digital, so I can record the channels I get on my dvr, if I hook it up right. But my dvr doesn't have a receiver, so I can't plug the cable into the dvr; I have to plug the cable into the tv and use the audio/video cables to get the tv signal into the dvr. Consequently I have to leave my tv turned on in order to record on the dvr, right? Which means I can't watch something else while recording, and if I want to go to bed while recording, I have to leave the tv and the dvr on all night, or till I wake up and turn it all off. Right? Just checking.

You need a demodulated base band video signal to go into the DVD. I suggest that you find an OLD VCR (only the electronics must work) split the cable, one leg to the antenna in of the VCR one leg to the TV set. Take the Audio Video output of the VCR to the DVD. DVD to the TV as you now have it. The VCR will work in the same way your TV is now taking the TV signal and converting it for DVD use. Do a channel scan with the VCR and change the channels with the VCR. I am surprised your TV set will do that. FEW have a TV output function.

You need a tuner which provides composite A/V. An old VCR should work, so long as it is one that stays on. Much better, and will provide more channels, is to get a cable box from your provider, which has A/V out.
