What specifications do you recommend for a self-build gaming PC?

May vary by 10% in your area)

Hi, is this including a monitor? I would personally recommend something like: Processor I5 or I7 (that's between £150-400 so what $300-700??) I find that the current Intel heat sink fans are more than sufficient so wouldn't recommend getting a third party one. for your ram I would go for 8GB of DDR3, Harddrive's are still quiet expensive at the moment due to what happened in the east but perhaps a 1-2TB drive WD are the cheapest at the moment. if you want to go crazy you could get an SSD drive as your primary but they are low capacity and very expensive. for your gpu something like : PNY GeForce GTX 580 XLR8 Enthusiast Edition 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card . I favor Nvidia over ATI but they also do some good cards! then onto your motherboard, you need to get one that supports PCIE, SATA, your chipset and hopefully with a high max ram capacity so you can upgrade in the future, Gigabyte do some nice ones usually not too expensive. for your PSU I would recommend a Modular one Hyper is a great brand something around 600w should be fine for your case this is entirely up to your own personal preference, when I started building my own I used to go for crazy thermal take ones with loads of lights in that were the size of a server. I now have a more modest standard case which has a forward fan, side fan and rear fan. As I don't live in America I can't really provide you with any shops but I've heard newegg aren't that bad, hope this helps

Any Intel quad core around $250, any modern-ish GPU around $250, 8GB DDR3 (any speed) is more than enough for all modern games, a half decent motherboard around $150 (decent brand such as Asus works well), a 1TB HDD (all companies make good products). Any CPU cooler with a good reputation at $30-$60 works quite well. What I'm saying is, have fun with it. Use Ebay if you have to to get the parts you want. I used Ebay AU for my references. There are many good 160GB SSDs for less than $200 now - ~$150 Satisfied? Powerful and pretty. Estimated cost before shipping ~$1835. Will do all you asked and much, much more. You can easily buy a GPU at half the price and still max all modern games on a single monitor while meeting your budget. You really can't go wrong. My PC is almost 3 years old, and with only a GPU upgrade, I plaay everything at max on a 2048x1152 monitor. Often I go into driver settings and force 16xAA and the such. There is a reason for this however. Overclocking. Heavy overclocking. 40% overclock on stock voltage with good cooling and overclocked GPU with sufficient cooling.

If you want a full specification I think you need to consider Alienware and Dell XPS. These PC are way high-end for delivering gaming experience for you. But it's way too expensive for my paycheck, and yet I prefer console than a PC except for work and MMORPG yep. Then, if you're planning for own customization I think you'll need a new processor such as Intel Core Duo Extreme or AMD Athlon 64 Extreme, get more RAM more than 1GB Mushkin|KingstonHyperX|Crucial and much more RAM brands, more hard disk space!!! may I suggest Seagate Raptor the most advance hard disk ever in the planet. Then consider about buying a hefty err nope a high or mid end graphic engine like Nvidia or ATI. These can be varied specification in terms of GPU and other software relevant. Yet you will need a new set of gaming hardware like sound card, monitor, cooling stuff for your PC i.e: Thermaltake Cooler is awesome. Then take a look at Logitech Wireless Keyboard and Mouse for better high fly action game sequence. That's just a general talk man, I'm not talking yet about all specification on each hardware's so gather more information on the net and make a comparison in each category such as display, processor and so on.
