What's a good HD camcorder?

The BEST quality format available to you, with a new camera, at or under your budget, is the HDV format Lare talks about. Fantastic quality, Soooo why are there so many HD camcorders and so few HDV units??? Most consumers place a high value on quick, familiar, and easy to use. Many do not grasp the concept that the miniDv tape used by HDV is a digital format, and provides a very stable, low maintenance archive solution. And many don't understand or plan for the firewire connection required with a HDV camera. So most people go with a HD camcorder. If you do, I get one closer to $500 as anything between $350 and $2000 gets the EXACT same data rate of 11 gigs/hour. Once you have this data rate, you are just feature shopping. The DSLR is an alternative and gets a better data rate at 20 gigs/hr. But DSLRs used for video have some serious limitations in usability which can easily be researched.

1080 will never be replaced for consumer use. the reason that 1080 was selected by the ATSC for television broadcast is that is the limiting resolution of the human eye for a display that can be put in normal home. 4k video is for theatrical use, for displays in theaters on a huge screen. so until people start putting 20 foot wide screens in their house, we a safe with 1080. Without any doubt, the only good consumer HD video format is HDV. it avoids all the problems of AVCHD and H.264 work alikes with respect to blurry and jerky video. a go pro hd hero 2 is a great deal for your price it shoots in 1080 with 30 fps and it will also do 60 fps and even 120 fps(frams per second) that means you can do crazy slow motion and you can buy a lcd back for the go pro for 80 dollars more the camera only costs about 300 and it has an 11mp camera that will do a picture every 2 seconds or 10 pictures in 1 second and it also takes standrad pictures as well

Sorry to break it to you, but HD is on the way out. 4K will soon be the standard. Check out cameras from RED if you want your films to look good.
