Plastic Surgeon Path?
-
Well, i'm 16 years old in the 11th grade.(Honor student with a 89% GPA), and i'm wondering how is the actual path of a plastic surgeon (Programs, time, recommended colleges in california perhaps, etc),What are the difficulties on chasing this career? Lots of people have told me this is a tough career, in which indeed it is, but they make it sound as if it's somewhat near impossible. Is this career THAT tough honestly? I just want some pro's and con's of an average highschooler who is great in science, but lacks a little on the mathematics part which unmotivates me from chasing the plastic surgeon career. When it comes to math, i shut down and tend to want to give up on it. My school's math teachers are horrible, except for 1 or 2 who don't teach 11th graders but seniors/freshmen. So guys help me out a little here? Also i have heard of how many people tend to drop out of this career because of how expensive this career is and again it just turns me off. Math + the cost turns me off and makes me have second opinions about it. Please don't say straight off the boat, "this isn't the career for you" because i am highly motivated for this career. I'm not just doing it for the money like most, but because being the 2nd surgeon doctor in the family brings a lot of honor. The only doctor, or atleas even the only professional in my family is the one who inspired me to go for this tough and competitive career. It's important to me to chase this career because i love to help people, and i come from a family who has gone through traumatizing events and have dealt with it calm yet sort of shocked (I have the potential to do good when surgery goes down in the surgery room). Not only do i love to help people, but just the honor and joy to be the 2nd doctor in the family is one of my biggest dream yet to be accomplished. So please help me out with the multiple questions i have asked up there. Please and thank you!

Answer:
Undergraduate degree - usually four years - take the MCAT Medical School - four years - take the USMLEs Residency (paid) - six years - take the plastic surgery board exams Difficulties - stress due to the amount of information you have to learn in a short time, the long hours you must work as a junior and senior medical student and as a resident. The expense of medical school. You do not have to be great in math. You do have to be able to get through at least one undergraduate math class and maybe statistics. You also have to make it through two years of college chemistry, one of biology, and one of physics. You will use math in these courses. However, many medical schools do NOT require calculus. Check the web sites of the medical schools of interest to you to find out their prerequisites. You won't know whether or not you can succeed in this career unless you give it your best shot.

Not quite. After med school, you do 1 year gen med residency (PGY-1). then you do a surgical residency 4+ years, then perhaps a fellowship, 2 years. These are not at surgeon schools, these are in residency programs at hospitals. You go through a process called match where the residencies pick you. However, forget worrying about that, worry about getting into & through college first, then med school, then residency. Talk to your pre-med adviser in college about what is needed. You need research/leadership/shadowing/possibly work experience/ something to make you stand out.
