What to do after my A Levels, instead of University?

What A-Levels will I need to study History at University?

  • Answer:

They sound like perfect choices if you want to study History. The archaeology A level will give you an alternative perspective on the past and English Lit will be useful for work on documentary sources. I chose similar topics for my A-levels as I wanted to go into Archaeology.

Those should be fine for History, especially if you decided on History and Archaeology, which I strongly recommend you doing. I find students get a much more well rounded education from the scientific applications and evidence based learning that an education in Archaeology can offer, along with the classic humanities skills the History department will distill in you. You'll probably have to take a fourth A Level in your first year, which you'll have the option of dropping. I would advise taking Religious Studies, particularly if you can take the Islam and Issues in Christian Theology units. I did these, and was surpassed how interrelated they were with my Archaeology and Classics (Ancient History) A Levels. Alternatively, a science might help if you're thinking of a Hist Arch combined honours. Just something I'd like to add - 'Archeology' is generally spelt 'Archaeology' here in the UK. In the US, Archeology is more acceptable among the laymen than it is here in the UK (although academics of any worth will generally spell it Archaeology). I know it's annoying, but it has a Greek etymology (as does much Archaeological terminology) so it's rather necessary to keep the a in there. I hope this helps and good luck!

Those are excellent subjects for History. The BIG thing I would advise would be taking a 4th A Level for the first Year (AS). You don't need to to continue it to A2 Level, you can drop it after the first Year. The Top Universities want to see a 4th AS level alongside your 3 A Levels. They don't care about having a 4th full A Level, but it is a disadvantage to not have the 4th AS. The subject isn't really important, they just want to see one.
