How to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer?

I really want to become a sonographer how would a masters degree benefit me?

  • my career goal is becoming a sonographer, unfortunatly I applied to a very competetive diagnostic medical sonography program in my area this year and did not get accepted. Now, I want to get my masters (already got a BSC). I feel that if I do get my masters either in biology or a health sciece field that would help me with my career. what do you think? how would a masters degree benefit me with this career goal? which masters specifically do you recomend? the university in my area only has molecular, neurosciece and ecological areas of expertise (the molecular and neuroscice use imaging techniques in their reserch alothough not sonography specifically) thank you for your advice

  • Answer:

There is really no benefit to having a Master's for this field, even if you found a Master's program for ultrasound. My professor in school had a Master's in u/s but he went to school in England. Anyway, an associate's is sufficient if your primary goal is to perform the ultrasounds. If you want to teach or become a department head at a hospital, you would need a bachelor's. Because Sonography is such a highly specialized field, a degree in biology or something similar isn't going to benefit you. I wouldn't spend the time and money doing that. Instead, look for another DMS program to apply to.

A masters would not specifically help you to be a sonographer because it would not be relevant-you don't need it, it would be expensive, take time and probably make you over qualified. Taking sonograms of people has nothing to do with molecular biology-so getting a masters in something like that would a total waste of everyone's time. You can ask the adviser of the program some things to make you more competitive, and you can go to another school, apply to others. You just need a decent training program, not the best.
