How can you apply to med school after nursing?

Is it possible to be a nursing major but still complete all the premed classes to be accepted into med school?

  • I've researched a bit on how there's no way to be accepted into med school right after nursing school. The curriculum for the two are just too different. Nursing school won't accept pre-med classes and Med school won't accept nursing classes. But is that true? If I really wanted to and am willing to do all the work, is it possible to complete both the nursing program and the medical school pre-requisits in the 4 years? Thanks.

  • Answer:

If you want to go to med school then why are you worried about nursing school? Pick one.Nursing school to be a nurse or med school to be a doctor. You can't do premed and nursing at the same time.

It depends on the policies of your college. You may be able to do so if you take classes each summer. Note that not all classes will be offered in the summer. You would have to plan your schedule very carefully to get all of your course requirements completed on time. Historically, nursing majors have had a lower than average rate of admission in to medical school. Medical schools are reluctant to admit nurses and thus contribute to a nursing shortage. They will ask why you went to nursing school when you really want to be a doctor. Consider doing all the requirements for physician assistant and medical school since there is more overlap. PA is a two year master's degree at most colleges. Or just doing pre-med and doing a second bachelor's BSN if you want nursing to be your backup plan.

There is no such thing as pre-med as a major. To get into medical school, you take a bunch of sciences and math. To get into nursing school you take a bunch of sciences and math. So I don't know what you are talking about. If you are looking at a two year nursing program, they aren't the same. But to get into the nursing program, the requirements are the same. If you get a BSN, then you should be able to go to medical school - assuming grades, etc. are good enough. However, they will wonder why you got the nursing degree and then go to medical school. If you were a nurse for awhile and then decided to go to medical school, it would be easier. So yes, you can do the nursing program and the medical school per-requisites. Just look at the requirements for the med schools you want to go to and compare them to the nursing requirements and make sure they mesh. They should. You might want to go for an ARNP instead. Less time, less cost, and almost a doctor in terms of what you can do, authority, etc.

Hmm, do this. First look at both curriculums. Find out if any classes can be substituted for another for example. Sometimes for pre-med you have to take calculus based math classes. OR in the science area you're required a class that will work for both nursing or pre-med. Then go to the nursing department and show the the pre-med science classes you feel fulfill the same criteria for both majors. As far as the nursing clinicals, those may not be transferable towards a pre-med program. I will tell you this though. The BEST pre-med program are courses which are for a Medical Technology degree. You learn EVERYTHING about the body, every tissue from its development to maturity, about EVERY disease process, how to recognize them etc.... I recommend that do ANY pre-med student. Good luck and do your research. Compare what is on paper and then hit the dean and professors up.

Sorry but you can't complete premed classes while being a nursing major. Nursing schools have very rigorous curriculums and it would be almost impossible to take both classes at the same. Either you should complete the nursing program and get your nursing degree. Then after you graduate nursing school you can apply to a medical school program. You will need to take the MCAT and some prerequisites before you get into medical school. However doing both at the same time just isn't practical.
