How hard is it to get into NYU?

  • Im a Freshman in highschool, so i know i have a little time to decide on what college i want to attend. But i've really been looking into NYU, I make all A's and B's, but i want to know exactly how hard you have to work. What kind of clubs to be in, what classes to take, etc. Answers from people who attend/attended the university would be very helpful! :)

  • Answer:

NYU is extremely competitive due to the amount of applications it receives. I wouldn't say it is as competitive as the Ivies, but it's academic reputation and nice location make it a desirable school for many people. With that said, you should try to avoid getting B's altogether, my friend was accepted and had a 4.3 GPA, 2100 SAT's and is a very active actress in So Cal landing many indie films and commercials. Schools like NYU want to see that you have challenged yourself with the most challenging courses offered at you school, if your school has AP classes take them, if it has IB do the IB Diploma. There is no right type of club or organization to be involved in, but you should have a leadership position (secretary, president, etc.) it is good to begin in freshman year, by finding something you really like and sticking to it, so that the college sees commitment to an activity. Most colleges want to see that you are a well rounded individual and is passionate about something so that they can have a diverse student body. For clubs and organization do something unique that is meaningful not just to you but that it affects a greater group of people. I was just accepted to UCLA and Wellesley, and they were really impressed that I was a founder, and president of a club that teaches students from inner city schools to design, and sew, and that I also obtained scholarships for all club members. You need to stand out in all parts of the application, with your grades, course selection, test scores, extracurricular and the essay, because mostly all applications are good but it needs to stand out.
