How loose should my leg cast be?

How to bend your knee after a full leg cast?

  • I'm a 14 year old boy and had my right leg in a full leg cast for 7 weeks, I got a half leg cast put on a week ago, my doctor says I should be able to bend it fully that night, I can stretch it out almost fully but can barley bend it past a sitting position with intense pain, like pulling a muscle. I'm scared if I bend it too far or too quickly I'll tear the muscle. The pain is only in my knee, not my thigh or lower leg.

  • Answer:

You have been in the long leg cast a long time, so it's understandable that your thigh muscles and knee joint are really stiff. You have most likely lost a lot of muscle in your entire leg (it will come back, once your cast is off). Ask your parents for some pain medication (tylenol, advil). After about 30-45 minutes, slowly take your leg and knee through gentle range of motion exercises. Sit in a chair. Straighten and lift your leg to work your quads. Bend your knee to about 90 degrees (sitting position). Hold. Bend (flex) just a little more (it might hurt some) and hold for 30 seconds. Don't force anything. Slow and easy does it. Keep trying this a few times every few hours. If you are watching TV, do your exercises for a few minutes during the commercials..... I presume you have follow up scheduled to have your cast removed in a few weeks. Make sure you take shoes, socks, crutches and some cream for your itchy skin. You might be able to start weight bearing with crutches then. If you are uncertain about anything, ask lots of questions. Ask for physio too. Try not to worry.

you absolutely need to go to a physical therapist. If you are having pain bending it passed the sitting position, you are going to need a physical therapist to stretch it for you and give you strengthening exercises. Compare your quad muscles (thighs) and I guarantee you the one that was in the cast for 7 weeks is smaller. you need to go to physical therapy ASAP. the longer you wait, the harder it will be to get that motion back
