What are your chances of dying in the army if you work in the medical field?
-
I'm trying to decide if I want to go in the army or not. I'm 16 so I have plenty of time to think. I don't wanna do it if I have to kill a friend. I definately want to work in the medical field there. How long do you have to be in the army if you sign up? I'll do it no matter what the pay is because I would like to help the wounded soldiers, but how much is the pay? Can you go to classes while you are in the army to strengthen your career when you get back home?

Actually most medics carry weapons now, since no one we fight seems to follow the Geneva Convention anyways. Also, having a huge sign on you that says medic is also non existent in the modern battlefield. That is a giant sniper target. Fighting against a civilized enemy, you are not allowed to target medics because they are classified as "non combatants", along with clergy members. However, not carrying around a weapon was a huge target for Iraqi insurgents and Taliban in Afghanistan, and they knew no platoon wants to lose their medic in the middle of a firefight. So now medics are armed and disguised alongside everyone else.

If your a field medic you have to accept death, a soldier cannot function properly unless he accepts death, as for killing a friend I'm pretty sure it isn't part of the joining process. But there are other jobs in the medical field, field hospitals are basically the same as civilian hospitals just with more trauma cases, but be warned almost anywhere in the army medical field there will be ,blood a lot of it! Not sure, but this is the first thing that came to mind: Visualize a Battle Field....100's of thousands of Tanks, Vehicles, Planes, Soldiers....EVERYONE of them has a Weapon of some sort, EXCEPT: You, the Medic....you have a white arm band with a Red Cross on it. I'll let you do the Math on the Odds.
The Solution
While operating in a few areas of Southeast Asia (after South Vietnam fell), I, as an NCO Intelligence analyst with an Infantry background had a VERY high price on my head for anyone who killed me. Medics, Machine-gunners and Radio operators (in that order) were the only ones with a higher price. If you could prove that you killed a medic, you got a substantially higher bounty (in their country you could actually retire).

For the main question, every member of the military can be deployed. If you are a mechanic, vehicles in a theater of operations break down and mechanic's are deployed. If you are a clerk, troops need may, they can be deployed. Any position/job that is needed overseas can have a rotation where your unit is chosen. Just because you're not combat arms does not mean there is no risk. My aunt was an accountant in the Royal Canadian Air Force. She had a tour in Afghanistan and before she deployed she had to qualify on the C7 rifle. And carried it on base, if it hit the fan she may have been required to fire on the enemy so who knows what chances you have of being injured or worse. I know in our Forces some times Med Tech's (Medics) jobs are to guard and protect the injured from the enemy so that is a danger also, medics get sent along with Infantry units so they could be in a situation where they engage the enemy. Any position in the military can be deployed and may face danger. In order to serve in the military and be serious about the job one may take. you have to consider the fact that all trades face danger on deployment.
