What is cellular data on iphone 3gs?

Can I use Iphone 3gs without data plan?

  • My girlfriend is getting the Iphone 4 and wants to give me her hand-me-down Iphone 3gs. Problems are she is with AT&T while I am with T-Mobile. On top of that I do not have a data plan. I have the 700 Minutes/Free weekends/free nights with unlimited text messaging. I figured I could put my SIM card in it and use it like a standing phone only for calling and text messaging. I do have a WiFi at my place so if I ever needed to update it I could always do it from there. Is this possible? Some people said I will have to jail break it to work for T-Mobile, but they weren't sure if I could use it without the 2gb data plan. I need hard facts please no opinions and uncertainty because I read that if you put sim card in the network auto recognizes it's a smart phone from AT&T and automatically bill you for a 2gb data plan.

  • Answer:

You could, but your not going to be able to use all of the phones capabilitys. Not having the data plan can also cause your phone to function at 75% because it is programmed to be utilized with data package. I tried it for a few days and a lot of my calls weren't coming thru and or text messages
