Why can't video streaming sites leverage my 100 MBit LAN-speed?

Why do some video streaming sites work better than others?

  • Okay, so I have a really weird problem. I can go on to YouTube or Netflix, and watch everything full screen. On YouTube I can watch 1080p full screen with no loading time at all. If I go to a site like Hulu or Crunchyroll (I am a big anime fan), then for some reason, the videos take forever to load. Always. It isn't my internet connection, because I have a decent one. I will include a link for the speedtest I just did, as well as my average one I normally get. My sister is playing WoW right now, as well as my mom and brother doing things so it's a little bit slower right now. I am on a laptop if it matters. I have tried plugging my laptop directly into our router, and I don't get any difference in video playback. My laptop has a Radeon 6310 HD video card, 2 gigs of ram, and a dual core 1.3 Ghz processor. It was just a cheapy at Walmart. But still, it should be able to play things pretty decently. I've tried on other video streaming sites like Veoh and Dailymotion and they play back perfectly, even in full screen. The only problems I have come across are Hulu and Crunchyroll so it's very odd. Let me know what could be the problem. Thanks!

  • Answer:

The problem isn't your fault at all. Like you said, your connection is perfectly fast, but that doesn't mean theirs is. Hulu and other sites have seen a popularity surge the past few years, but they don't have the same infrastructure as youtube, which has been around a lot longer than most and has the resources of google backing it up. The Hulu servers can't deal with the strain of having so many users as gracefully as youtube can.
