Should I do Chemistry (Chemical Engineering), Law or English at university?
-
I'm trying to decide what course (if any) I should take at uni. I've narrowed it down to these three options: Chemistry (offers a lot of career options and I'm likely to get a high paying job but the work involved seems very tedious and boring), Law (This has more interesting job prospects but is highly competitive and any high earnings would come 20-30 years down the line) and English (To me the most interesting subject, leading down the paths of Journalism and publishing etc, but this is even more competitive, and with a high likelihood of low earnings). I do A levels in English Literature, Chemistry, Philosophy and Ethics and Maths, I'll probably get A's in these subjects as well. I'm really undecided as to what to pick, so if you can offer any advice or can tell me anything about the subjects if you are doing or have done them. Thank you.

Answer:
I decided against law as learning all the cases would have driven me mad .. it just didn't appeal. Instead I did chemistry and, after some industrial research, ended up teaching in an international school and was involved in revising the chem Baccalaureate syllabus and also in setting and marking Bac exams. I attended meetings held in a mixture of languages.. another challenge. My career was always interesting and challenging, but I could have earnt more money as a lawyer. However I have also discovered the money is not the be all and end all of life, and I have no regrets as I was well paid at the top end of my profession. Nobody can tell you what to do. My advice is ask as many people as possible teachers in each area, careers advisors, friends of your parents etc etc and listen to what everyone says and then make your own decision.
