Is volunteering a good career move?
-
I'm 26 and all I have done is retail and other minimal wage jobs. I never got accepted at internships during college. And my degree was pretty much useless. In the meantime I figure I should volunteer. 1) I was hoping for a nice reference letter. and 2) it sounds better than some fast food joint on the resume. 3) Easier to get than an internship. 4) You don't have to be in college. True some internships are not college based but most are. I was thinking doing 3 different types of volunteering Once every other week or once a week. Not too bad. First one is Animal Care. Basically.... It seems that I will help make the lives of dogs more easier until they get adopted. It looks like cleaning cages and making the dog feel comfortable. But is it a good idea? I'm not sure if my future job will be related with animals. There's no pay invovle. Which is fine cause I want a reference letter and a better sounding resume. Question, instead of dog compainon..... Should I do Administration? I think I should do that instead, sound more productive. It appears to be more data entry but I don't think they really need that. Again I didn't start yet. Other two places is tutoring in public schools, mostly elementary. 3rd is blood bank. I figure I could talk to the phlebotomist directly. cause I'm interested in that field. All in all I think it would look better on a resume. Should I note that it's volunteer work? Would people take things like this seriously on a resume? I dunno.... Hoping to get a new job soon. Figure this would be okay to do on the side. I mean 1or 2 days a week isn't going to kill me. If I do data entry for animal care.... I think that would be good experience no? Or am I wasting time?

Answer:
It is a good move as it shows your employer you are motivated and passionate about your job instead of sitting at home and taking the easy option you might have spent abit of money and took your own free time out to help a company you will also gain experience, and more contacts. Hope this helped
