How do people make money off of YouTube?

People such as Ray William Johnson, Smosh, machinima and IndyMogul make all their income from YouTube. I have heard that the more views and subscriptions you have, the more YouTube pays you. But how? How do you start earning money from your account? How does YouTube form a partnership with you and start paying you? Can someone explain the whole business model of YouTube?

heres simply how it works, you have a account on youtube, you have 500k views each, the youtube offers you partnerships= we put ads on your videos and you get some money from the amount of people that viewed your video/ads, then youtube i belive adds exrtas to the ammount of people who liked it and favourited it etc.etc. its all about those small ads on the side

I got roughly 20K Views in a short amount of time on some random video I uploaded. Google then emailed me asking if they can run ads on page (adsense) and then I get money for it, Basically adsense is a lot easier than getting a partnership and you can still paid (No where near as much) Google ''Adsense'' and go from there.
