Are cats and dogs colorblind?

What can I do about someone elses dogs mawling my cats?

  • I am adding as much detail so responders can get the whole picture, so please don't jump to conclusions without hearing the whole story first. We live in the country, there really aren't any ordinaces here for pets. The last two mornings we have had a very pretty big yellow lab and an older scruffy looking companian at our house. They chased my cats up a tree yesterday, which is no big deal- they are dogs. We wouldn't have noticed them if it hadn't been for our own dogs going nuts. But they ran off after being shooed away. This morning however, they caught one of my older cats, who is missing a leg from an amputation due to an accident several years ago. They mawled her and drug her out into our pond. I put them in my car and set out to find their home after we got them corraled. I have a neighbor asross from me who has cattle, one block up a neighbor who has very expensive brightly colored chickens, and one more block up has horses. The lady with horses let me know where they came from and that she had spoken with them a few times because they were chasing her horses. The man a block over said he would just shoot them with his pellet gun if they came back after his chickens- the one accross the street- will just shoot them period. I took them back to their owner, who really didn't care that they had mauled my cat, and she informed me that they lived in the country so the dogs could do whatever they wanted. So, I informed her that if they were in my yard again- I would take them directly to the pound. These aren't bad dogs. They are very friendly and playful. They are young and not fixed. This lady was P.O.-ED. Am I in the wrong here? What should I do if they are after my cats again? It's true there aren't any "pet laws" out here, but I can't help but wonder if she knows my neighbors can legally kill her dogs if they are after their livestock. It's not the dogs fault. Moral dilema!!! Help please, advise please !!!??? I love animals. We have 3 dogs, and 7 cats, along with several varieties of smaller pets. I don't want to hurt or see her dogs get hurt, but I can't let them kill my cats either, (my neighbors will kill them if they are after his cattle) that's all I told her.I don't get it- why do I feel guilty? Signed- Confused.

  • Answer:

In this situation you are not wrong to take them to the pound. Her dogs are her responsibility as well as what her dogs do. I live in a place with pet laws that aren't enforced and had a very viscous dog who was tormenting me and my dogs every time we went out in my yard. My neighbor is not a kind man and shot at the dog more than once for peeing in his grass. I explained to the owner that he was going to get killed if he didn't keep him in his yard. He ignored me and my neighbor shot at him again so I got him into a crate put him in the car and took him to the pound. He is still at the shelter but it's a no kill shelter and he is actually doing a lot better now that someone is actually paying attention to him.

Hi my name is: ANIMAL

There's no need to feel guilty. I'd send them to the pound, or tell the neighbor with the cattle that if he sees them again shoot, shovel and shut up. I'd also arm myself with a copy of some bylaws or something similar to show her, as PROOF that landowners have the right to do what they feel best, be it trap or shoot, an animal that is harassing their animals. If that doesn't work, just take the dogs to the pound. Don't say anything to the "lady" where you put her dogs. I doubt if the cattle producer next door would say anything if he killed her dogs either. But that's just my opinion. You need to choose what course of action is the best for this.
