How do I make my recordings "speed up?

Will getting an external hard drive make my FRAPS recordings speed up?

  • I have plenty of memory on my new PC, I also have a AMD 6-Core processor and a Nvidia GTX560 as my graphics card. I do not lag while recording I just suddenly drop frame rate for about 1-2 seconds and then it shoots back up. It is visible in the recording and while I am playing. I thought that if I got a new hard drive JUST for the recordings that it would stop this. Is this the right decision?

  • Answer:

FRAPS relies specifically on speed to write directly onto the hard-drive, yes it would speed things up but it has to be a fast hard-drive and if it is USB make sure it is USB 3.0 if you have it, also shut off all unnecessary processes while running it, the reason it drops is because the Hard drive has to read and write quickly at the same time like if you are running a game and recording therefore lowering FPS, also you might want to upgrade you RAM too, and make it so that FRAPS runs on directly one of the cores All in all FRAPS really does rely on your hard drive more than you think but you will need more than that to make it work well as was said before. Oh, and you will know if you have usb 3.0 if you PC has the port in blue: http://hothardware.com/newsimages/Item14427/usb-30port.jpg

What led you to believe that would make anything faster? A hard drive is just a storage device. Just clip out the laggy parts after you're done recording. Since it only happens at the beginning it shouldn't be a problem.

To speed up game recording, you should use Bandicam. It looks like the Fraps, but so much better. See http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=bandicam

Well, the USB connection itself makes drive access much slower than SATA... How big are the files you're generating? Maybe create a RAM disk?
