Is a 2005-2006 Nissan Altima a good car?

What car should we get, Nissan Maxima/Altima or Hyundai Accent?

  • My husband and I are a young couple looking to purchase our first car. We didn't want to spend a lot of money so we decided to buy a used car from a private owner. The max we are willing to spend is $5000. Our preference is a nissan altima or maxima. Older model with no more than 115,000 miles and in good working condition. We chose nissan mainly because through our research they are really great reliable cars. And if maintained well, these car can easily handle close to 200k miles. So we just feel it's a powerful car and will be worth the money. We went to small car dealership and they showed us a nissan maxima that was nice but we think it was overpriced for the mileage. However, they showed us a 2006 Hyundai accent with 60k miles and we were like wow and it fit right into our budget. We were shocked because we didn't think our money could even afford a 2006 vehicle with under 70k miles on it. But I'm not sure if we should get it or not. It's cute for me but not so cute for my husband. He's 6'2 and it's just not the type of car for a man and it's a car we are both driving but we think it's in good condition. What do you think? Which car would you buy? Would you get the Hyundai accent or look around for a good older model nissan. Financing is not an option.

  • Answer:

Let me add to this confusion... I am a proud Nissan Maxima owner. I have a 2000 GLE with 210K miles on it and it has only left me stranded once and that was just a freak incident becos it started the next day and ran as usual. Lol.. maxima are indeed GREAT vehicles. I've had mine since 2001 and the incident I referred to earlier just happened in January of this year, aside for that... it has started everyday since 2001. When my car finally dies out I will be looking into getting a new Maxima. Good luck... be smart and do your research and I think you have your own answer very shortly!!!

Hard question to answer. It is correct that the Nissan Maxima or Altima would be more of a sure thing in terms of good record, parts availability, etc. But Hyundai has been getting steadily better over the years, and there is something to be said for newer and lower miles. I normally don't buy at dealers, because I think I get better deals on craigslist. On craigslist I did not find a lot of Accents. But the price did seem reasonable. Look for accident repairs, such as paint overspray on the window rubber, in the trunk, etc. I think I would go with the Nissan out of fear of the unknown, but Hyundai may not be a bad deal.

I would buy the Nissan. You can check out the reliability of each at consumer reports.

Hyundai accents are junk. With your budget, you'll be able to get a much nicer Altima or Maxima.

I have a Nissan Maxima I bought new in 1998. It has 125 thousand miles on it and stills runs okay.
