Will I have to buy healthcare insurance?

I am a United States Army veteran, who gets healthcare through the VA. Do I still have to buy insurance?

  • There has been a lot on the news lately about Obamacare, the so-called healthcare plan that forces you to have health insurance or face penalties. I am a United States Army veteran, who gets healthcare through the Veterans Administration. Do I still have to buy insurance? Why? My healthcare is free through the VA. This is something I earned when I signed up and served to help protect your freedom.

  • Answer:

Thank you for helping protect the United States and what we believe in.

The VA counts as health insurance. you aren't required to pay for a plan, your just required to be on a plan, which you are.

First, no one is required to buy insurance under "Obamacare". It is mandated that you have insurance, or you will have to pay a penalty when you file your taxes. If the VA insurance you have is a qualifying plan, then you are covered. And second, the mandate isn't in effect for a couple more years. This is one big part of the upcoming case in front of the US Supreme Court: If they can even hear the case now since it has not come into effect yet. This is the first part they need to decide, then, if they do decide they can hear the case, then it will go forward, and they will hear the arguments. There's a lot more involved in the case, but that all will come after they decide if they can even hear the case.

That's a good question, but my comments are for Leigh - I know you probably didn't mean anything bad about it, but I thought you could of used better words than the ones you had chosen. You see, am a 20 year veteran and I receive my insurance from Tri-Care West, which is through the VA and all I pay for is my meds. The words "free ride" just did not sit well with me. All military is entitled to medical benefits that our government has given us. Do we really know if this applies for the military who attend the VA Medical Clinics?
