How do I change my wireless password on Linksys router?

My linksys router won't accept any password change?

  • I'm using the WRT54GS model. I was able to setup password for my wireless before, but now it is unprotected. I went the 192.168.1.1 to set up my password, but it always displays the security mode as "disabled" enven thought it says "setting are successful". I've tred to reset my router to the default setting many things, but it's still no use. How do I fix this?

If it's no longer holding / saving settings after you change them, try flashing the firmware with the latest version, even if you've already got the latest installed. That's Linksys standard procedure for any initial Router problem. You'll first need to get the hardware version off the label under the Router so you can choose the right firmware update from the menu: http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/WRT54GS Save the .bin file to your system. Before you start the flash, go to your Administration panel and save your current configuration. Firmware flashing doesn't wipe your configuration, but it's always good policy to save it just in case you need to do a hard reset. go to the Administration panel and run Firmware Update - choose Browse to find the file you just saved. Click on Start Update. It takes about 2 minutes for a full flash and reboot; you'll see the LED's start flashing again when it's done. Try to set your wireless password again. If that doesn't do it, do a hard reset (making SURE you've saved your configuration first) by using a paper clip and pushing/holding in the recessed reset button on the back of the Router (it's in small hole). Hold it in for about 30 seconds, then let it reboot. Once it's rebooted, log back in using admin/admin (hard reset will purge pw). Go to the Admin panel again and Restore your configuration. Try again to reset your wireless security password, and don't forget to change the admin password again also. If that doesn't do it, the Router's probably nearing its end of life. That's not a young model; I haven't used that particular one in about 8 years. If it's toast, spring for a new Linksys E4200. Speed is unbelievable, and the setup is a breeze.
