Can anyone answer my singing question?

i know its important to warm up when singing but i have problems singing when i do warm ups the internet advises me to do, is it alright to warm up with a few calm, peaceful songs that don't go too high, when i do this (start singing calm songs) i feel my voice lighten and i start sounding better. the problem i have when warming up is that i literally cannot hit steady high notes, it's like theres a blocker in my vocal chords and when i aim for notes i can hit without warm ups (like scales and breathing) i can't if you know what i mean, does anyone know if this is bad or dangerous it's pretty hard to explain

Hello, Do not be discouraged! There are a few important things I would like to know which is one how old are you? Two are you a Male or Female? There are a few important things to know about the voice! The Larynx doesn't finishing growing until you're 35 years old. That the voice is a muscle and it can be over used and damaged if you aren't careful. You only have one set of vocal cords and no body parts can be replaced like a getting a new set of guitar strings. The voice is different than any other instrument!!! Your ENTIRE Body is your instrument from your head to your toes! So you need to take good care of it! With getting at least 8 hours of sleep a night, Drinking 8 Glasses of water a day, Good Diet which means no drinking no smoking taking it easy on sugary drinks and junk food, Regular light everyday exercise and not lifting heavy weights! The one thing I recommend to you more than anything like I do do all of my students is focusing on breathing! Breathing is your power source!!! It takes off all of the pressure on your vocal cords. Your breath is the motor and the vocals are the vibrator. Look into diaphragmatic breathing! Focus on this for two weeks and it should help so much! You will learn that a lot of the problems you are having in singing are coming from breath control issues which is also referred to Also as "Support" which deals with Diaphragmatic or "belly breathing" and Expansion of the rib cage with slow release and keeping your chest down and shoulders down while taking a breath in. You may find that you are doing high upper chest breathing which will just put stress and tension on your vocal cords which will eventually cause damage. Another thing is that the voice is a muscle and just like in running we have to take things in smaller intervals before we can run a complete race. It takes time. On top of that every voice is different. Embrace your own sound and your own range don't try to mimic extremely advanced singers. They have had years of training. For example: We wouldn't go run a 5k marathon tomorrow if we hadn't been training and working on it for several months. As you know with running and exercise we have to go slowly working up to our goals. It is no different in singing. But to plainly answer your question is you aren't supporting with breath control and you are putting stress directly onto your larynx and vocal cords pushing causing glottal pressure. That is why you are having issues with sustaining higher notes. You are trying to push your chest voice into your head voice. Fixing your breathing should help this. It is hard to answer this 100% with out actually seeing you sing. So please be careful and I recommend seeing a private instructor for further help. Good Luck!

I do deal with these things every day as a full time treacher. I think I know very well what you talking about but, no one can help you over internet, sorry. You will need to find someone who will help you to get rid of the bad habits you have in your technique. This may only do an experianced teacher standing next to you and giving you a feedback. Do not go for any books, dvd's or online tuition - these things do not help.
