Why is New Zealands Crime stance with the current government so extreme, conservative and illiberal?

What do conservatives and liberals *think* they stand for?

  • This question isn't about whether liberals or conservatives actually represent these causes in real life - there are lots of hypocrites in politics, along with many differing ideas - but rather, my general idea of what liberals and conservatives believe or think their platforms actually are. Agree? Disagree? According to conservatives: Conservatives are in favor of: A strong national defense. Adherence to the Constitution, particularly its original intent. Small government Energy independence. Low taxes The rewarding of a hard work ethic The private sector, private enterprise and entrepreneurship Protection of sanctity of life (the unborn). Reduced government spending - in particular, much less deficit spending or borrowing Laissez-faire economics A tough stance against crime, including more severe punishments for criminals Less government intervention/interference. A greater emphasis on personal, individual responsibility A tougher stance against hostile or Communist foreign nations Freedom of religion A stronger stance against illegal immigration, particularly from Mexico The right to bear arms According to liberals: Liberals are in favor of: A healthy ecosystem and environmental conservation - going "green" Equality of opportunity, particularly for the disadvantaged Greater educational attainment across the spectrum Greater humanitarian assistance to foreign nations in need of it Women's rights Gay and lesbian rights Ethnic/racial minorities and "diversity" Provision for the needy in America (welfare, social net, etc.) Unionized labor Keynesian economics More income equality A more "internationalist" foreign policy A strong stance against large corporations, the wealthy, and the "1%" Gun control

  • Answer:

On Conservatism, you left out one important thing, and that is charity, or institutional charities. They support that strongly. You also left out Private property rights. One thing that you completely took out of character is this: *Conservatives are the ones for Equality of opportunity *Liberals are for Equality of outcome. These are huge differences in philosophy.

There are a lot of shared values that you don't mention. Liberals want law and order too, they are just less tolerant of police abuse. Conservatives want people who need it to get government help, but they are less tolerant of Welfare Fraud and the like. It is sad the the differences, led mostly by hate radio and fringe groups, are all that people relate to these days. This makes any compromise on these issues impossible and we have the polarized and disintegrating society that is around us today.

The problem with your question is that it is intelligent and well thought out. Therefore you are only going to get ridiculed for it. In a nutshell the liberals say that what is best for the masses is best for the country and the conservatives say that protecting the rights of the individual allows them to succeed and that is best for the country. Neither side is wrong but there is no way to accomplish both agendas

Civil Disobedience

Pretty much. I usually say that libs think with their hearts and Conservatives think with their brains, which I think is also true.

That's a pretty good summary. The key distinction running through it all: Personal Responsibility versus Government Control

Freedom of religion goes into the Liberal section.

ttp://www.absolutefacts.com/history/abra… Abraham Lincoln Quotes on Liberty "We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others, the same word many mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men's labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name - liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names - liberty and tyranny." Then as now, conservatives believe in each individual minding his own business, while liberals believe in individuals intruding as much as possible into the lives of others. Conservatives believe in following the law and the Constitution. Liberals believe in overthrowing and usurping the law and living as criminals. Conservatives believe that separation of church and state means to keep the government out of my religious expression. Liberals believe that it means we must be equally intolerant of all religious expression, and the government must prohibit our religious expression as much as it can. Conservatives believe in following the Bible. Liberals believe in burning the Bible and mocking those who believe in it. Conservatives believe in saving money and spending it frugally. Liberals believe in recklessly squandering more money than we have, and leaving nothing but a stack of bills and a mountain of debt for those who come after them.
