Foot sprains still hurt like hell. The loud crack could have been a number of things, from joints over extending, to bones grinding when you rolled your ankle. If it where broken, there would be a very noticeable discoloration (purple/blue not to be confused with a normal bruise) and difficulty moving your toes. This can also be seen in severe sprains, but if your doctor did not notice any fracture in your x-ray, he is probably right.

I've broken bones in my foot, tore ligaments, and severely sprained my ankle on separate occasions. The break hurt less then the sprain or the ligament tear. An x-ray would definitely tell if you broke anything so I would give my doc the benefit of the doubt. Ligament tears won't always show on an x-ray unless they hyper-extend your ankle. Trust me, you don't want this... I almost passed out when they did it to me.

That's what a sprain feels like. It's painful, but if you'd broken your ankle it would be swollen up about 3x its normal size and you'd be in ABSOLUTE agony. You really know when you break bones. Anyway, if they've x-rayed it they will be able to see a break.

It's still a foot sprain. They still hurt when you put pressure on them, just wait for it to heal
